WP1: Integration and Evaluation 10 MW Rotor

In figure 1 WP1 is presented in vertical direction because it feeds the horizontal focused WP’s with information on the reference rotor. On the other hand, WP1 is fed with improved models from the focused horizontal WP’s. The lessons learned from the horizontal WP’s, i.e. the final improvements from the aerodynamic models and their impact for > 10 MW turbine design are assessed in WP1. This assessment will be conducted by an evaluation committee in a systematic way considering dedicated assessment criteria, which amongst others consist of ‘amount of empirism’, calculational time, ‘difference between models’, robustness and time to set up a calculation. .
 
The Work Package starts with the design of 10 MW reference rotor for offshore operation. The turbine that hosts this rotor is the INNWIND.EU  turbine. As such WP1 is linked to the INNWIND.EU project. The INNWIND.EU RWT design is relatively conventional where the AVATAR RWT will be pushed towards the edge of the aerodynamic modeling.

Both turbines will be used in the follow-up of the project to test the various aerodynamic model improvements.

During the course of the project the AVATAR RWT will be under an ongoing re-evaluation using the new generation design tools and knowledge acquired in the follow-up Work Packages WP2 to WP4.

In the second part of WP1 the reference high-speed rotor is redesigned using the new generation tools and employing passive and active aerodynamic control devices. This culminates in a beyond-state-of-the-art rotor design which combines high energy production with minimal loading. The differences in designs are assessed and the potential of the various improvements is quantified.

Finally  the perspectives and the  erodynamic related activities needed to upscale the rotor designs toward the 20MW scale will be summarized in design guidelines.
